Contains holograph manuscripts of three of May's children's stories, including Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer (Chicago : Montgomery Ward, 1939), Winking Willie (New York : Moxon, 1948), and Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer shines again (New York : Moxon, 1954). Also included are book layouts, Denver Gillen's color separated illustrations for Rudolph, and a mounted Life magazine cover from January, 9, 1950. Includes Robert May's scrapbook related to the publication of Rudolph, with newspaper clippings, Montgomery Ward advertisements, and fan letters.

Robert Lewis May (1905-1976). Dartmouth College Class of 1926. In 1939, May, an advertising editor for Montgomery Ward department stores, authored the popular children's Christmas story Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer for his employer. The story was a popular success and in 1947 Montgomery Ward relinquished copyright of Rudolph to May.
